Updated Official Rules

McDonald's has heard your complaints and has published a FAQ to answer some of your questions.

How long will it be before we can add Mickey D to the list with PCH (Publishers Clearing House)and we must then stand in line to see justice done- at least McDonalds did reveal this unjustice and promised to correct it-although the way of going about it- is a different story! Its still not clear on just how the prizes will be distributed, but ALL of the stories I've heard does not seem fair to us- the customer-and yet leaves us wondering whether or not we should trade in our "KIDS MEAL" for the BK-"BIG KIDS MEAL."- J's Grandma

I feel that my taste for McDonalds has just been taken out of my mouth and even more so after finding out that although the scam was revealed- the consumer should be given equal chances at still winning the prizes from the game that was otherwise fair-and to find out the way its to be given away now could still be a scam...Couldn't you have come up with a better way to give away the prizes! Why not allow each customer to have an equal chance at the prizes and not being misled after placing their order and at the pay window being told that the prizes will be given to customers at random and different stores will be chosen....Not FAIR!!!! - K.B.I.

There has been a big misunderstanding on how the millions of dollars will be won and I feel it has been falsely advertised for while resently traveling through different cities at every one stopped at-each had a different story as to how the prizes would be won! I feel everyone should have the same chance to win and not miss out by not being at one of the McDonalds chosen at random....So tell me, just how is this any way of proving that we can trust this method of choice and restore faith in McDonald's in the near future-I'm more skeptical now that I hear of the way winners will be chosen...not fair to everyone who normally would have had equal chances of winning, now only to be replaced with random choosing of winners! Please help us to keep the faith and not be misled by thinking that we can have a chance to become millionaires too---and if not in the city or restaurant chosen then we have no equal chances!!! Very dissapointed!!!!- Renda

This was the biggest joke i have ever participated in. I am a regular at the Escatawpa/Mosspoint, Ms. 39552, I go there every day to get something. First, i threw my game sheet away because, i read in the Mississippi Press, about the scam. Then i camp out at the Escatawpa McDonalds, only to read that the Millions, was given away as usual in the big city places. I feel that your all see the need to put stores here and take all the gifts elsewhere. I am very upset about the whole McDonalds thing...... Mississippi, do anyone ever say why not Mississippi we are big spender to. McDonald's what can i do to regain your trust for the southern state. ...

I am beyond disgusted at McDonald's. So, they knew there was fraud going on, and yet they continued the game.....continued to sell food under the pretense that you "might" win; knowing that there was no real chance of that happening, unless you were connected to the fraudulent ring of individuals. How much additional monies did they make while they knew? I think of how my kids saved their allowances to actively play the Monopoly game, all the while "believing", and it literally makes me sick to my stomach.

And now, this contest; another scam. The rules clearly state, no purchase is necessary. But, did the prize presenters approach the winner in FLA when he first entered the establishment? NO. Did they approach him before he purchased breakfast for him and his girlfriend? NO. He was approached as they had just sat down to EAT.

What a scam. What a shame.

I will not be taking my family to McDonald's anymore, and I intend to let their corporate offices know why.

In the course of your latest promotion, with the game pieces are to be available thru Labor Day weekend. I have found this to be false. I went to the store at Jimmy Carter Blvd and Highway 29 in tucker Ga at 10:30 A.M. on Labor day and not only did I not get my chance to get a game piece to try for the announced 1 million dollar prize, but I got no indication that there was even a contest going on. I know that the person responsible for the scam that gave you all of the bad publicity was from the Atlanta Area  (Lawrenceville) so I want to know if this is because the people of the Atlanta area are not included in this or is this just another example of the type of service that we have grown accustomed to with McDonalds?
Linda S. Rowland - There are NO game pieces in this game. A computer picked the winning restaurants, time and place of the winner. Then representatives walk up with a certificate and pick the potential winner.  Read the FAQ that McDonald's released. There has not been a potential winner announced from Georgia.- cheril

I have been at McDonalds a number of times, of course I wasn't in the right place at the right time and win. I asked how to play the game, they gave me a the paper which said nothing about having to be at the right place at the right time. I think you should have gave out game pieces or something. Not just being a certain number of a customer at the drive thru.  - Patricia H

I received this e-mail from McDonalds:

Thank you for taking the time to contact McDonald's about our 2001 "Instant Giveaway."

You may have already seen the Official Rules about the "Instant Giveaway" on our web site. We are sorry if we disappointed you in any way and would like to clarify the details of the Giveaway.

First, it's important to know that no purchase is necessary to play and there are no game pieces involved. From August 30 through September 3, 2001, all you need to do to participate is be at the right McDonald's restaurant on the right day at the right time in the right place.

Because the restaurant locations have been randomly chosen by computer program, customers have an equal chance of being a potential winner of a $1,000,000 or ten $100,000 prizes each day. The day, time and place (inside the restaurant or in the drive-thru) have also been randomly chosen.

If you are a potential winner, you will be approached by independent judges. All you have to do to play and win is to be at the right McDonald's, at the right place, at the right time. It's that simple.

If for any reason you received inaccurate or incomplete information about the Giveaway, we sincerely apologize. We hoped the communication we gave our restaurants and the information we shared with our customers through advertising (which included the statements "no purchase necessary" and "no game pieces required") provided enough information to avoid confusion. We also further outlined the facts of the game through posters, Official Rules posted in each of our restaurants and our web site, and a letter from our chairman, Jack Greenberg, explaining the Giveaway.

Also know you still have a chance to win valuable prizes as part of our current "Pick Your Prize Monopoly Game at McDonald's" promotion, which is still going on in participating restaurants.

I hope the above information helps you participate in this "Second Chance" giveaway.

Thank you again for taking the time to contact us. Please know that nothing is more important to us than your trust. We hope you'll visit our restaurants during our "McDonald's Instant Giveaway" promotion and give us another chance to earn your confidence and trust again.

You've got to be kidding... I can't quite imagine the scene where the big boys at mickyd's are slapping each other on the back for coming up with this silly "cover-down" solution.

"We'll dump a few bucks quick & that'll appease those silly masses - should bail us out on any short term losses, eh Jack?"

The new "game" itself is non-consumer friendly, another form of McScam (worse because it's done knowingly) & is the ultimate insult to the public.

Way to go you bunch of clowns. Looks like YOU MAY NOT BE AT THE RIGHT PLACE AT THE RIGHT TIME.

Crap is what I think about it...During the game I ate religiously at mcdonalds filled the game board up more than once with the thoughts I really stand a chance, just to find out basically I had 15timed during the contest my mcd's input all for no chance.

So, I go to Beatties Ford Mcd's(my regular micky'ds for lunch) on first day of new game at 3 pm and none of their Brightest could even explain how the game was played ,,not good.So after I get on the internet and find out what the deal is,,yeah just what I want to do Labor day weekend go hang out at mc'd's in the hope some phantom prize team is going to show up where I am ...and besides we are traveling from Charlotte to Kentucky for the weekend to visit relatives ..get this,,,I convinced my wife to stop at one just to see if anything was going on,,we stopped in a mcdonalds off some exit near Wythville Va. and they have NO LOITERING signs in their dining room...yeah that was a real incentive to go in and play a no purchase necessary game...

That was the proverbial last straw for me... Over the years Mcdonald's always meant you could depend an a FAST- consistent- at a fair price meal and believe me that was important for a traveling musician because it didnt matter where you went it was the same..as of late to me fast isnt a option any more,,you never know from one place to the next how good ,,so consistent is gone ,,and even in charlotte prices vary depend on what side of town you are on ...(I wont even tell you my thoughts on that) I just hope that everone who is as frustrated as I am will just quietly disappear from eating at the place ,,sure am glad I dont have anybody screaming happy meal at me for my dining experience cause I betcha I will be searchin for the king or Daves place from now on ..thanks

..... I visited our local  (Texas)  McDonald's yesterday for lunch yesterday. Guess what I found on the counter? A small flier that briefly explained McDonald's Monopoly Game/FBI involvement fiasco and introduced a new "Instant Winner Game". I asked the girl at the counter ( and then the manager)  about how this new game worked and she said she didn't "have a clue what they're doing now..." Boy, my confidence in McDonald's ability to run a new game soared. The people that work there don't know anything about it, they just put out stacks of fliers from Corp.HQ as they're told to do. I'm sure we'll have a local winner. What's supposed to happen? A McDonald's bigshot just happens to stroll in and randomly pick a million dollar customer? Yeah, that'll happen

Well I dropped by McDonalds last Thursday and Friday for my 'chance' to win and walked out feeling more ripped off than ever.

At least with the Monopoly promotion I ACTUALLY had chances to win in my hand, walking out with a winning (food) piece almost every day, and (I thought) a possibility to win something big.  Considering we had to eat anyway, a value meal is a good 'value, and someone (who plays) does win (or so I thought) this wasn't unrealistic in any way.  But the recent 'promotion' is poorly thought out, with it's vague, unfair rules.

WHAT THEY SHOULD HAVE DONE was distribute 'McDonalds lottery-style tickets', with commercial times listed and website (and possibly newpaper) where the winning numbers would be posted, then EVERYONE would have had a chance to win the prizes not the 'lucky' ones who just happened to be in the 'lucky' McDonalds at the 'lucky' time (which I fail to see how they could possibly 'pick out' someone randomly).  This also would have been a huge promotion, bigger than the recent Powerball jackpot, and not the huge rip-off that I feel I was part of.

The winners have been CHOSEN. It's not a random game but the places of winners are predetermined. They should have just rename the last game from "You Choose a Prize" to "We choose the Winners". I'm sure the winners locations are chosen to get the most out of there advertisement bucks. - cjberck

I am very upset as I have spent alot of money and time into this game hoping to win something worth while, just to find out it was all rigged. I went to McDonalds faithfully every day some times twice a day to play this game and now I find out it is all a scam. I dont like the way McDonalds is "making it up to their customers" for some people did not invest the amount of money I did in playing this game and all they have to do is be at the right McDonalds at the right time. I hope whoever by some slim chance that gets picked is someone who put money in this game really thinking they had a chance to win something.

Sincerly,

LeAnn

On 8/30 I went into three different mcDonalds trying to figure out how to even play the game. All three mcdonalds gave me different information. One of them had no idea how the game was played. Another told me it was a lottery/drawing. Another rudely handed me the circulating flyer and said it explained everything. It doesn't explain anything. After some calling and research, it seems a mcDonalds rep maybe ina restaurant, even without the employees/manager's knowledge. They then randomly pick a winner. This seems highly subjective and mysterious. Do they pick the 1000000 customer? Do they pick the best looking customer? Their flyer says I can go into ANY restaurant and play and be eligible to win. This is clearly the case. The winning cities have clearly been preselected, and my city may never get a chance to win. This seems a big fraud just to draw customers into McDonalds. - Camrun

I checked with McDnald's here in Gwinnett County, GA and found that you have to GO INSIDE and a Corporate Person will appear and SELECT a winner, wherever and whenever they choose during this period. This is blatant foolishness. Now the corporation can actually cheat for themselves and pick whomever they choose. I thought all I had to do was go to McDonald's these few days and eat a lot and have a lot of chances. Guess I am somewhat stupid at age 70 in thinking that they would be fair!!! - Loraine

I do find it disturbing how many people have been to Mc Donalds and the people there don't know of this new promotion. I plan on going today to see how my local store is doing. - Cory

the new game is wrong it does not give every one a chance to win only select individuals we alllosts a chance to win despite where we live -  ludricruis

I stopped at the MacDonalds on Douglas in Racine this morning, after 7 a.m. and bought a breakfast sandwich. When I asked about the new sweepstakes, no one at the store, including the swing supervisor had any idea what it was.

You guys just don't get it. I'll eat at Wendy's tomorrow. - Wallace

I just went to lunch with my husband and son in Lexington, KY.  I do not know the exact location of the restaurant but it is located off of New Circle Road near Liberty Rd.

We entered, knowing nothing about the contest taking place this weekend, and saw the flyers at the counter.  We picked one up and read it.  First, I think it is very misleading.  Only one time does it mention that these chances are random and that is very ambiguous.  In fact, I had to read it 4 times and then go to the website to clearly understand that just because you were in the restaurant did not mean you could get entered in the contest.  Secondly, the staff at the restaurant had NO CLUE how any of it worked.  In fact, they did not even realize that it was beginning today.  We commented that the flyer read that it started today between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 30 minutes before close.  We were in the restaurant at 10:50 a.m., ordered, dined in, and asked again on our way out and got a "Sorry, they are supposed to be here but we don't know what is going on".  The manager, or who appeared to be a manager, was in the dining room apparently interviewing someone and could not take the time to find out what was going on.

So, I guess for my comments, I would say "Sorry, you didn't make it right this time."  In addition, they were out of hot wheels and the fries were hard and stale.  I won't tell you we will never return to McDonald's because with 2 children, ages 7 & 4 that is always where they want to eat but I will tell you I will not return to this location.

I realize you are only looking for comments about the game, but please forward this on to the comment department.

Regards,

Bess D.

In the instant game they will only be awarding the "big" prizes and that figures out to be 1 grand prize($1M) and 10 First prizes($100,000) per day for the "whole" country. I think this becomes 1 prize per area and 1 prize per state during the whole 5days of the the instant win giveaway. Pretty small odds to be in the right place at the right time during these 5 days and not even get a free ice cream cone. - grannyz
